Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Earth and Environmental Sciences as well as an elective minor programs in Environmental Science and Geophysics. If a student is interested in any of these programs, explore them further on this website and consider contacting the EES undergraduate advisor to discuss them further.
Note that our former major programs, Bachelor of Science in Geological Sciences and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geosciences are in moratorium through Fall 2030. Only students that have enrolled in these majors prior to Spring 2026 may continue in them.
Our Academic Major Programs
The Major in Earth and Environmental Sciences offers flexible pathways to support careers in geology, environmental science, and planetary science.
The following two programs are in moratorium through Fall 2030. Students already enrolled in these programs can complete and graduate with their degrees. No new enrollees are allowed.
- Geological Sciences - Bachelor of Science (in moratorium through Fall 2030)
- Environmental Geosciences - Bachelor of Sciences (in moratorium through Fall 2030)
Our Academic Minor Programs
Experiential learning including field trips and other excursions
In the Earth and environmental sciences, development of field skills are an important
training component. An important consideration for employment in the 21st century,
these hands-on skills and field experience are not easily replaced by computers. Our
instruction includes first-hand data collection combined with cutting-edge technology
and computational analysis including the use of Artificial Intelligence.
As part of this experiential learning, many courses in the undergraduate curriculum
incorporate day or weekend trips to apply classroom knowledge in the field. The EES
major includes a required field course, which may be satisfied by a 6-week off-site
geological field camp.
