Visualizing mineral weathering: The microscopy of Prof. Michael Velbel

Many geoscience journals publish photos on the cover of each issue, often an image from or related to the contents of that issue.  The cover image for the November-December 2014 issue of American Mineralogist is the latest photo from the research of MSU Professor Michael Velbel to be selected for this distinction.  Since 1991, over a dozen of Prof. Velbel’s  images, acquired using transmitted polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, have been used for journal covers, a book cover, a NASA Phoenix mission press release, and an "Images of Clay" online image archive.
