Velbel Chosen for NASA-ESA Mars Planning Group

Michael Velbel headshot

EES' Dr. Michael Velbel was recently selected to serve on the NASA-ESA Mars Sample Return (MSR) Science Planning Group-2 (MSPG-2). This group of 29 will spend almost a year refining elements of a plan that "sets the foundation for the international stewardship of the first samples brought from another planet." Weekly virtual meetings began shortly after selection, and with plenty to do between meetings, ad hoc virtual meetings are sometimes necessary. Velbel was designated the Focus Group lead for the Task of anticipating effects of sample sterilization on specific types of measurements from different types of samples. Considerable time-and-effort is required, and so far, Velbel says he is enjoying this immensely.
