EES Welcomes Dr. Michael Reidy; "Thinking Through Mountains"

EES welcomes the Montana State University Michael P. Malone Memorial Professor, Dr. Michael Reidy. He will present "Thinking Through Mountains: Verticality, Radical Orogeny, and the Rise of Modern Science"

Reidy is Professor of History in the Department of History and Philosophy at Montana State University. His current research focuses on how the sport of mountaineering advanced the practice of science in the nineteenth century. He is interested in all things vertical. He is the author of Tides of History: Ocean Science and Her Majesty’s Navy (Chicago, 2008), and co-author of Exploration and Science (ABC-Clio, 2006) and Communicating Science (Oxford, 2000). He is also the co-general editor of the ongoing nineteen-volume Correspondence of John Tyndall (Pittsburgh, 2016-) and recently co-edited a volume on Tyndall entitled The Age of Scientific Naturalism (P&C, 2014).

The Michael P. Malone Memorial Professorship is in honor of Dr. Mike Malone, the tenth president of Montana State University and one of the state's preeminent historians, as well as a previous Department Chair of the History and Philosophy Department.
