Professor Michael Velbel is on sabbatical leave for the academic year 2012-2013, spending most of this time as a Smithsonian Senior Fellow in the Division of Meteorites, Department of Mineral Sciences at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. There, he is working with his co-hosts, Division of Meteorites Geologist and MSU alum Cari Corrigan (B.S. 1995, M.S. 1998) and Ed Vicenzi, on aqueous mineral-alteration textures and assemblages associated with olivine in Mars meteorites.  As part of his Mars-related research, he was an invited participant in a mid-December European Space Agency International Study Workshop on “Mars Sample Return: Determining Biohazard indicators in Martian samples” at Imperial College, London.
